Thrifty mc cheese

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Hi All,

A couple of quick thrifty updates.

To save money when eating out we have been ordering a cheap main and any other main we want and then sharing it.  This saves $10 to $20 per dinner and we don’t miss out.

I went to the op shop the other day and bought a shirt I would have paid $40 for for $5.

Thrifty is nifty (even if a bit you know).

See you thrifty chums!

More Thrift

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Lets check the thrift:

We are going camping and needed a tent.  Normally we would just buy one but instead our friends kindly lent us one saving $50 to $100.

We are building a limestone wall.  Our friends had some left over limestone blocks so instead of them going to landfill we are using them.

Again we took our own breakfast Saturday morning to swimming and just bought coffee.

Renee has lent us her camping fridge no cost.

Damian and Alyssa got us free tickets to the movies and we took our own food and drink so a cheap fun night out.

Sarah and I had lunch with Amy and instead of going to dome we had a picnic.

More thrift than you can thrift a thrift at

We continue to save money.

  • We have installed power boards with an on off switch so we can turn electronics off properly and stop them drawing power
  • We had 2 internet connections and cancelled one of them
  • I had an unnecessary phone line that I cancelled
  • At breakfast on Saturday we took food and only bought coffee
  • Dirk drove us to the beach
  • We had bring a plate night Sunday so no restaurant bill
  • We are going camping in 2 weeks and we are car pooling and borrowing a tent

Thrifty Wage Earner

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

As I am now a wage earner we are putting 100% of my wages into our mortgage and living on Sarah’s wages.

Viva la thirft!!

Nifty Thrifty

Latest thrifty updates.

  • Sarah and I have been making lunches each day.
  • I am a coke zeroaholic so I have bought big warm bottles from the supermarket and decant them into 600ml bottles.
  • We have been switching the computer, TV and microwave off at the wall to save electricity.
  • We bought cheap foreign beer.
  • We have started an ebay box of stuff we will sell on ebay.
  • I bought bathers reduced from $64 to $10.
  • I estimate we are saving between $50 and $100 a week at the moment.

Year of Thrift Begins

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Now that it is 2010 Sarah and I have decided to have what we call “The Year of Thrift”.

We want to pay as much money off the house as we can in 2010 so we have decided to try and save as much money as we can without reducing our standard of living.

Here is what we have done so far:

  • Day one 1/1/10 we went to Perth cup horse races.  We had to pay $30 each to get in.  However we set a $20 gambling budget of which we came home with $19.80.  We took 2 bottles of champagne and had a net saving of $30 and took all our own food.  A day that would normally cost around $150 cost $60.20.
  • Day 2 (Today) we went to Coogee Beach to do our swimming training.  Sarah and I had some toast before we left and made a coffee at home.  When we went to the cafe afterwards we bought a coffee each and ate the apples we took with us.  Normally we would spend over $20 on breakfast but today we spent $10.
  • Sarah went to the op shop today.  She bought 4 dresses for $12.  We estimated they would cost $350 to buy them new.  One of the dresses that she paid $3 for was brand new, had never been warn and had a tag for $129.
