Nifty Thrifty

January 7th, 2010

Latest thrifty updates.

  • Sarah and I have been making lunches each day.
  • I am a coke zeroaholic so I have bought big warm bottles from the supermarket and decant them into 600ml bottles.
  • We have been switching the computer, TV and microwave off at the wall to save electricity.
  • We bought cheap foreign beer.
  • We have started an ebay box of stuff we will sell on ebay.
  • I bought bathers reduced from $64 to $10.
  • I estimate we are saving between $50 and $100 a week at the moment.

Damian Fasher, Alison Thompson, Chad Marriot and myself are swimming in the 2010 Rottnest Swim on the 20th of February 2010.  The swim is about 19km.  We are all getting better.  I swam 1.5km in good conditions at Coogee Beach in 37 minutes.

Year of Thrift Begins

January 2nd, 2010

Now that it is 2010 Sarah and I have decided to have what we call “The Year of Thrift”.

We want to pay as much money off the house as we can in 2010 so we have decided to try and save as much money as we can without reducing our standard of living.

Here is what we have done so far:

  • Day one 1/1/10 we went to Perth cup horse races.  We had to pay $30 each to get in.  However we set a $20 gambling budget of which we came home with $19.80.  We took 2 bottles of champagne and had a net saving of $30 and took all our own food.  A day that would normally cost around $150 cost $60.20.
  • Day 2 (Today) we went to Coogee Beach to do our swimming training.  Sarah and I had some toast before we left and made a coffee at home.  When we went to the cafe afterwards we bought a coffee each and ate the apples we took with us.  Normally we would spend over $20 on breakfast but today we spent $10.
  • Sarah went to the op shop today.  She bought 4 dresses for $12.  We estimated they would cost $350 to buy them new.  One of the dresses that she paid $3 for was brand new, had never been warn and had a tag for $129.

Sat 28th March

March 29th, 2009

Running club was on of course.

DD and I did 9.6kms and everyone else did a combo of walking and running.

Chad didn’t run because he was doing an Olympic distance triathalon today (Sunday).  That is 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

This coming weekend the round the bridges run is on Sunday.  So I will be jogging 2kms on Sat and running the bridges Sunday.  I hope everyone goes in it on Sunday.
